Sometimes, when things feel unbearable, something keeps us here.
A person. A pet. A thought. A moment. A reason.
Why I Didn’t is a place to share what made you stay.
Your story might give someone else hope.

Stories from people who stayed

My sister called me at the exact moment I needed someone.
I picked up without thinking. Hearing her voice interrupted something in me. It gave me enough space to stay.

My dog came and lay next to me.
I remember looking at him and thinking he would wait for me. I couldn’t leave him like that.

I told myself to wait until morning.
By the time the sun came up, the intensity had shifted. I’m grateful I gave myself one more night.

A small part of me was still curious.
I didn’t know if life would get better. I just realised I wanted to know. That curiosity kept me here.

I called someone I hadn’t spoken to in months.
I didn’t know what to say, so I just said, “I’m having a really bad night.” They stayed on the phone with me.

I still knew I didn’t want my life to end.
I was deeply disappointed with where I was in life, and the pandemic made everything feel heavier. Being around family added more stress, and I went back to a toxic relationship because I was struggling to cope.

I thought of my son.
I remembered him running from the school bus into my arms, his water bottle swinging wildly around him, with this huge smile on his face.

I realised that I hadn’t told my maid not to come the next day.
It was too late to call her. I didn’t want to scar her, she had been nothing but wonderful. I fell asleep thinking about this. The thoughts had vanished by morning.

I thought of my mother and brother
Someone I trusted deeply betrayed me, and overnight my life changed. I lost so much, and my sense of who I was shattered. The thoughts became vivid. But when I imagined the pain my mother and brother would go through, I couldn’t do it.

I stayed because I was angry.
I didn’t suddenly feel hopeful. I just thought, “I’m not letting this be how my story ends.” At the time, anger was enough.

I wanted to make sure I’d got everything in order.
I did not want to leave a mess or things to figure out on my children. It was not fair. I kept thinking when I create the perfect Excel sheet, it’ll be time. I could never make that Excel. I did not want to trouble anyone.

I realised I wasn’t the only one feeling this way.
I wanted the noise to stop. It seemed like a good idea to just end the noise. But I didn’t know how. Google kept sending me to helplines. I realised a lot of people were thinking of this. I thank Google for knocking sense into my head.

A gratitude post on Instagram.
I was lying in bed, stuck in the same thoughts over and over.
Then I saw a random post about gratitude. It was something about the music, the joy, and the way this person spoke about being alive.
It interrupted everything.
I started thinking about how lucky I actually was

A delivery guy wished me a great day.
A delivery guy rang the doorbell and told me to have a great day in such a cheerful tone. It switched off my thoughts almost immediately.
He looked really tired after a long day, but he still seemed so genuine when he said it. It made me question everything I had been telling myself.

I just knew I shouldn’t do it.
I was living alone and felt like there was nothing to look forward to. I kept wondering what I was waking up for, what I was working for, what any of it meant.
Nothing seemed to make sense anymore.
I started thinking seriously about ending my life. But somewhere underneath all of that, I just knew I shouldn’t do it.
I don’t know exactly what stopped me. I just couldn’t.

I wanted to finish my book.
I know this sounds small, but I saw the book I was reading on the dresser.
It was on my Goodreads list, and I’d already talked about it with people in my book club. I wanted to know how it ended. I also wanted to show up and talk about it with them.
I think people like me there.

I thought of the beach.
The sand, the waves, the air.

I remembered a leak in my mother’s house.
I remembered a leak that needed to be fixed in my mother’s house. I had told her I would get it fixed.
Thinking about leaving it undone made me feel bad. She has done a lot for me. I started wondering who would do it for her, and thinking about her sadness made me sad too.
I texted her that I would come the next day and fix the leak, and then I went to sleep.

I remembered my wedding day.
I remembered my wedding day, and how happy and full of joy I was.
Years of loneliness had made me forget so many good things in my life.
It made me feel that maybe there was more to my story.
I don’t know.

I didn’t want to rip my sister’s pigeon net.
My sister and my husband GET me. They understand my frustration with things we’ve normalised in India — low pay, long working hours, and crumbling urban infrastructure.
But I also thought about the pigeon net on my sister’s 10th-floor balcony. I didn’t want to rip it or leave my sister and niece to deal with the aftermath.
So I stayed.

Tuesdays with Morrie.
I was 16 when I considered ending my life, but I was recommended a book called Tuesdays with Morrie and then some more books that I continued reading, and that made me stay.
I’m very happy now and continue reading whenever I can.
Music is another reason — specifically Linkin Park!

I remembered my kids.
I thought about my children. Losing my life wouldn’t hurt the person who had hurt me. It would be a huge loss for my kids.
I also held on to my faith. I believed that if God had given me these problems, He would stand beside me and help me find solutions.
Living with everything I’ve been through is still very difficult. But I have one life, and I’m still here.

I chose myself that day.
In 2005, I went through a painful breakup. I was living in a women’s hostel and cried for months, struggling with the betrayal.
One afternoon, I came close to ending my life. I cried for hours, questioning everything. Would it teach him a lesson? Would I get justice? Would it solve anything?
Eventually, I began asking myself why I was punishing myself for someone else’s actions. I sat down, calmed myself and decided to walk away.
Nobody knows what happened that day. But I chose myself.
I learnt never to make permanent decisions when my emotions are at their peak.

I started noticing the little things.
I know it sounds corny, but I started loving the little things.
I gave my life a background score, woke up to a melodious alarm, and started thinking of myself as the protagonist in my own story.
When I focused on one big thing and it failed, everything felt terrible. But when I had a hundred small things to enjoy, failure just became something to learn from and adapt to.
I think I trained my brain to notice those little things.
And I have a loving partner who loves me, flaws and all. That made me want to stay too.
